RESUMO

To improve newborn survival and ensure a healthy start for every baby, Member States of World Health Organization endorsed the Action Plan for Healthy Newborn Infants (2014-2020) in the Western Pacific Region in 2013. The focus of which is on implementation of early essential newborn care (EENC). Such items, regional approach to introducing, sustaining and scaling up EENC; progress in EENC implementation;mobilizing social support for newborn care; best practice, lessons learned and future directions, were summarized in this editorial. Efforts are being undertaken in China, which would help to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal targets on maternal and child health and universal health coverage.

RESUMO

Haemolysis has been known to cause artefacts in certain canine serum chemistry parameters. These parameters are often used by researchers to detect toxicity in certain studies; haemolysis, therefore, can make serum chemistry interpretation very difficult. In order to determine whether a relationship existed between the level of haemolysis and certain canine serum chemistry parameters, haemolysis was artificially induced by adding a haemolysate of known haemoglobin concentration to serum specimens. A routine clinical chemistry profile was performed on each specimen. Statistical analyses were performed on the results to examine the relationship between level of haemolysis and serum chemistry results. Interpretation of serum chemistry results of haemolysed canine sera paralleled, in most cases, human historical data.

RESUMO

The computer tomographic manifestations of orbital pseudotumors are varied. Among these findings, tram-tracking of the optic nerve sheath complex is rare. A patient with this unusual scan appearance is presented. Despite rapid clinical response to steroid therapy, this patient showed little initial improvement on computed tomography. The use of computed tomography scanning in the management of orbital pseudotumor is discussed.

RESUMO

The computed tomographic (CT) features of two cases of bilateral lacrimal gland sarcoidosis are presented. The incidence of this type of bilateral orbital involvement may be greater than the previously reported statistics, which were based purely on clinical examination. The CT findings and the differential diagnosis are discussed.

RESUMO

Topical administration of nylidrin hydrochloride lowered intraocular pressure in both albino rabbits and cynomologus monkeys. The maximum decrease occurred two hours following drug application and was unilateral. The response lasted four hours in monkeys and at least six hours in rabbits. Outflow facility, episcleral venous pressure, and aqueous humor flow measured by fluorophotometry were unaltered in both species. In rabbits in the treated eyes, ocular blood flow was increased, and anterior and posterior chamber ascorbate concentrations were unchanged. The mechanism of IOP reduction appears to be increased aqueous humor outflow via uveoscleral outflow routes that are not pressure dependent.

RESUMO

Fourteen aphasic patients with acute onset of thromboembolic cerebrovascular insults demonstrable by angiography or radioscintigrams who were available for long-term follow-up have been studied. Their aphasia evolution was compared with acute angiographical and radioisotopic findings, and the lesions shown by follow-up computerized axial tomography (CT). Angiographical site of occlusion, evidence of early reopening of occluded vessels, and radioisotopic flow asymmetries including the "hot-stroke" luxury perfusion failed to correlate with aphasia outcome. Radioisotopic static images were more helpful by depicting lesion location and number but lacked the definition seen on the CT scan. The long-term CT scan by showing the size, location and number of lesions had a good correlation with aphasia outcome. Those patients with large dominant hemisphere involvements, either one large or many smaller lesions, fared poorly while those with lesser lesions did better. Bilateral lesions, at times evasive clinically, helped to account for significant aphasia residuals.
